Gilbert's Repuation as Buzzerbeater Helps 'Zards Beat the Knicks

The New York Knicks were determined to stop Gilbert Arenas from beating them.

They did, holding him to 4 of 14 for 16 points and 9 rebounds but they paid for it.

With the Knicks sending a double team at Arenas with 12 seconds left, the Washington Wizards passed the ball from Gilbert Arenas to Antawn Jamison to DeShawn Stevenson to Caron Butler, who dunked with 2.2 seconds remaining Wednesday night to give his team a 99-98 victory.

Overview of Weekend

The past 5 nights have not been good ones for Washington Area sports with the Wizards going 1-1 with a buzzer beating win by Gilbert Arenas who scored 51 Monday night versus the Utah Jazz. The Caps went 0-2 by being outscored 12-5. The Baltimore Ravens lost to the Colts in the divisional round of the playoffs in a battle of field goals, 9-15. The University of Maryland’s men’s basketball team went 1-1 with a win over #14 ranked Clemson then followed a disappointing loss at Virginia; and, the Lady Terps took a step back by going 0-1 and falling to the #3 spot behind ACC rivals Duke and North Carolina. Overall the teams went a disappointing 2-6, a 33.3% win percentage.

#1 Ranked Maryland Women Fall short at #4 Duke

I am not going to lie. Even though this game was nationally televised I did not watch it for one simple reason. The power was out in all of St. Charles, Missouri. I make it a point to watch all the games from DC sports that are televised at my school but due to an ice storm power was out in most areas around campus, and I without a car had no choice but to wait to see who won when power finally did come back. My dorm still has no power as it is on the old side of campus. Needless to say the building across the sidewalk has power but of course not mine. I was disappointed but not surprised they lost considering it was a “payback game” at Cameron Indoor Arena after we beat them in the national championship in April. I was surprised how handedly they beat us 62-81, with only 2 Terps scoring over 10 points and Duke having 3 with over 15.

Needless to say last nights Capitals game was a big game because the winner would move into eighth place in the Eastern Conference standings. Despite a solid game from Alexander Semin who scored two goals and Alexander Ovechkin who added two assists for Washington, the Caps gave up two early goals in the first nine minutes. The caps goalie Olaf Kolzig blamed the loss on his performance, and later was quoted, "The team played terrific. The goalie let them down. I just didn't make the saves I needed to make and that basically was the difference."

Terps Womens basketball team beats Miami

It came as no surprise that the Maryland Women's basketball team was ranked #1 in the preseason poll after winning the national championship last year. With most of the team comming back who says the Lady Terps cant repeat again? The Terps are 18-0 and are still ranked #1 ahead of ACC rivals Duke #3 and UNC #2 nationally. The Terps traveled to the University of Miami and the result of the game was never in question as the Terps scored a season high 59 points in the 1st half. The Terps travel to Duke this Saturday to play the #3 ranked Blue Devils for the top spot in the ACC.

Terps fail to win an easy one

The Maryland Terrapins men’s basketball team has started off the season in non-conference play by winning 13 out of 15 games versus teams that will not have a chance at going to the NCAA tournament. They entered last night’s game 0-1 in conference play. The opposition tonight ACC pushover the Miami Hurricanes. The Terps played down to Miami’s all over the place style of basketball. The starters for Maryland went a combined 9-for-47 from the floor. Greivis Vasquez was 1-for-11, James Gist went 3-for-12 and Mike Jones missed 8-of-11 tries. The way Maryland played made it appear that they, again, would be NIT bound again. The Hurricanes (9-8, 2-1 ACC) compiled statistics that don't often result in a win: 31 percent shooting, 15 turnovers and a mere seven assists yet somehow found a way to beat the 25th ranked Terps.

Wizards win despite Arenas' off night

Usually when Wizards superstar Gilbert Arenas has an off game the Wizards usually find themselves struggling to keep up with the opposition. That was not the case last night as the Wizards beat an Eastern Conference power Chicago Bulls comfortably 103-113. In an interview Gilbert Arenas told the media that "the supporting cast did a great job," as he was holding back laughter. Then Arenas jokingly yelled across the locker room at the rest of his teammates, "Yeah, Wonder Woman was terrific tonight!" Jokes aside Gilbert’s teammates stepped up and helped carry the scoring load with six players in double figures. Caron Butler led the way with 26 points, 10 rebounds, and 7 assists. Arenas despite the off game scored 20 and Antwan Jamison chipped in 18. The difference in the game was the 19 turnovers Chicago made to the Wizards 8. Center Etan Thomas returned to action after missing 13 games with a sprained left ankle. Effort like that night in and night out could help the Wizards make a push in the playoffs later in the year.

Caps sweep Flyers in season series

Yesterday was a relatively quiet day for Washington DC area sports, with only the Capitals playing the Philadelphia Flyers at the Verizon Center. Just because the schedule was light did not mean that there was not plenty of action on the ice. The Caps did not waste very much time finding the back of the net when Brooks Laich found Ben Clymer fifteen seconds into the game for his fifth goal of the season. The Caps continued to pour it on after the early score to take a 4-0 lead after the 2nd period, including two goals from young superstar Alexander Ovechkin, more on him later. Both teams added two goals in the 3rd period to make the final score 6-2. The Capitals now have 19 wins and 17 losses (45 points) good for 3rd place in the Southeast division. The Caps next game is Thursday as they take on the Tampa Bay Lightning in Tampa at 7:30 P.M.. Ovechkin did not only score two goals in the win last night, he was voted to the all star game as a starter along with the young Penguins star Sidney Crosby. Crosby, a MVP candidate this year, was picked number two overall behind Ovechkin in the 2004 NHL draft. Ovechkin will be the first Capital to start in the game since Rod Langway in 1986. The All Star game will be played on Wednesday January 24th at 8 P.M. in Dallas, Texas, so make sure you tune in to watch your favorite Capital skate with the best in the NHL.
